LaPolice Named New Coach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers
By Scott Taylor
In his first major move as general manager of the Winnipeg Blue Bonbers, Joe Mack has hired Paul LaPolice as the team’s latest head coach.
LaPolice, who was the offensive co-ordinator of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, will replace Mike Kelly as the team’s on-field boss. LaPolice was the offensive co-ordinator of the Bombers in 2002 and 2003.
The Bomber went 12-6 in ’02 and lost in the Western final 33-30 to Edmonton. In ’03, they went 11-7 and lost the Western semi-final 37-21 to Saskatchewan and LaPolice was essentially run out of town on a rail by the local mainstream media.
LaPolice will be the 28th head coach in Bomber history. The team is coming off a 7-11 season in 2009 and LaPolice will have to find a quarterback and a new set of young receivers. The Bombers lost up-and-coming wideouts Titus Ryan and Dudley Guice to NFL contracts this off season.
Interestingly, the mainstream media’s darling this time around was former Bombers defensive co-ordinator Greg Marshall, but Marshall was a bride’s maid again even though he was the darling of a number of board members who like to appease to the local newspapers, no matter the team’s best interest.
Marshall is now the front runner to take over the Toronto Argonauts, although as Marshall knows, there is no guarantee.
