NFL Overtime Rule
The Old Boys Network
Well the old boys network was at it again. Looks like they have incorporated the “Brett Favre” rule. Remember when the inept Vikings gave the NFC Championship game away during regulation with all of their mistakes? Then the Saints who tied the game late and won the coins toss to receive the ball first in OT and wasted no time marching the ball down the field – with the help of corrupt officials – to kick the winning FG. Well the Vikings never got their hands on the ball and Favre was seen pacing and pouting on the sidelines. So the NFL tall foreheads have decided to remedy the situation somewhat. The new rule will only take place in playoff games. Which is totally absurd. In the history of the NFL…this new rule if it had been in effect since day one…would only have gone into effect 3 times. OT just does not happen that often in the playoffs with the first team to gain possession winning by a FG. However almost every week during the regular season there is a game that goes into OT…and yes more times then not the coin toss winning team takes it into FG range and wins the game. Therefore this rule should have been put into effect for ALL NFL GAMES! More important at the meetings was – why wasn’t the phantom pass interference call that cost the Vikings a chance at receiving the ball in OT, and the official who called it was not brought into question? The Viking DB DID NOT EVEN TOUCH THE SAINTS WR…yet the flag was thrown. He must have had a bundle on the game and will no doubt still be in his Zebra suit come next season…still betting bundles with off shore betting sites. Until the NFL cleans up the corruption that is officials who gamble and are on the mobs payroll this crap will never stop. The NFL should hang their heads on blowing this one.
More Ranting
Plus there has been no talks between owners and the players association as to a new CBA agreement yet. The NFL players union seems to have a egotistical idiot in DeMaurice Smith running the show now who wants to make a name for himself by firmly planting his feet into the mud and not budging. Maybe he should hold a séance and ask former leader the late Gene Upshaw what a mistake that will be. Read my lips – NFL OWNERS HAVE NEVER LOST A CBA ARGUMENT AND THEY WON’T THIS TIME EITHER – even it means a year with out football come next season. Which is the last thing we want to see.
Great Free Agent Signings in the NFL
Lets look at some other teams that have strengthened their team with the recent FA signings.
CHICAGO BEARS – Were quick to get the Panthers preeminent pass rusher in the NFL Julius Peppers into the Windy City and signed on the first day of FA. This will be a great move to bolster a sagging Bears defense from last year. The Bears are counting on Peppers having 4 more good years left and signed him to a long term contract. With a healthy Brian Urlacher returning as their defensive Captain and Peppers up front they should return to their “Monsters of the Midway” mode of operandi. Plus they wasted no time either in signing Chester Taylor away from the Vikings. Taylor will bring a valuable assets to the Bears offense and help relieve some of the 3rd down pressure that Cutler faced time and time again. He will compliment Matt Forte well in their two-headed ground attack now.
DETROIT LIONS
They also struck early and twice on the first day signing WR Nate Burleson from the Seahawks to come in and give Mathew Stafford another deep threat on offense to go to. They also signed Titans veteran DE Kyle Vanden Bosh to come and strengthen their D-Line. He will also be a great influence to mentor either Suh or McCoy if they so choose to go that way with their second over-all draft pick. Which if you ask me they would be crazy not to do. They can always select a O-Lineman with their second round pick, but rumours are persisting that they may go that route in the first round.
MIAMI DOLPHINS
They signed the best LB available in FA in Karlos Dansby to strengthen their defense on the linebacking corps.
There are still may veterans sitting on the sidelines waiting for that phone call. Like I mentioned in a past blog – because of the fact there is no CBA, the crop was weak this year and the best are already signed. Teams will most likely now wait to see who they will select in the upcoming NFL draft in late April and then tinker with their rosters. It will be interesting to see if Terrell Owens will find another NFL team to play with this season…or will have to ride off to the great ego-zone in retirement.
Cleveland Browns
Oh yea…one more tidbit. One owner is sans meetings in Florida. Who else but the psychologically challenged recluse known as the owner of the Cleveland Browns – Spoiled little rich boy Randolph Lerner – who inherited the team from his Daddy and has about as much knowledge as running a NFL team as the Pope does playing Craps in Las Vegas. He has probably locked himself in the dungeon of his 15 century castle in England and is sucking his thumb. The man is an incompetent recluse. HOWEVER…Mike Holmgren now runs the football team and is filling in for the “Howard Hughes” of the NFL at the meetings with total carte blanc to vote on any proposition that may come to vote. Yes it is a total disgrace and I wonder what the other owners think? But at least for the first time since the inept Lerner family (who have more money then brains – Daddy used to own VISA) we have a competent well versed football man in Mike Holmgren running the show. No wonder Lerner is paying Holmgren 10M a year!
