THE SIDELINE
(RB Staff) – The troubled Steelers QB met with Roger Goodell concerning his off-field conduct and legal problems. The league suspended Rothelisberger for 6 games without pay for his conduct which includes an alleged sexual assault and other similar actions in licensed establishments. Goodell determined that Roethlisberger had violated the NFL’s personal-conduct policy and ordered the two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback to undergo a “comprehensive behavioral evaluation by professionals.”
The Steeler Organization
His actions are clearly not what the Steeler organization is looking for in a leader. The team may act on their own to set an example to others that such behavior is not tolerated within the organization. They have just dealt with a wide receiver (a former NFL MVP,) which had a series of off field problems to the New York Jets. They don’t need another scandalous player.
Big Ben’s problems may have just begun, but the organization is quick to put a halt to salvage his reputation and may concentrate on reshaping his image and placing him on probation with strict conditions. This has helped many players in the past who have gone on and had good seasons.
Difficulty handling fame
Many pro athletes have difficulty handling fame and financial management. But the league has many mentors that help ease the questioned players into fine form with advice and shadowing from other players. In the past such resources were not available to players who needed such help, which had sad endings or damaged careers. Let’s hope that this does not happen to Big Ben, he is a fine quarterback and should be given the benefit of the doubt, to change for the better.
